Celtic Cross
The ‘Celtic Cross’ design incorporates a ring/circle surrounding the intersection of a decorative cross.
The tradition of erecting these monumental stone crosses throughout Ireland began around the 8th century. Celtic legendary suggests that the crosses were introduced into Ireland by St Patrick as a symbol of Christianity in an attempt to spread the word of God throughout pagan Ireland. He is said to have placed the circle at the top of the Christian cross in order to combine this religious symbol with the pagan symbol for the sun and so emphasizing the importance of Christianity within 8th century Ireland.
Many examples of these Celtic ‘High Crosses’ can still be found throughout the Irish countryside today in many different ornate design styles.
The ‘Celtic Cross’ is a unique representation of Irish culture and history and is worn by many as a symbol of their faith and culture.
